coffee, new words and plans

Never underestimate the restorative power of a good cup of espresso. Today has been spent catching up on admin tasks, including marking the remaining 1st year work from last term.

And while I’m here, I sent someone this link to Tomato’s next book this morning. I found it largely by accident, while looking for examples of their previous work, and it’s not gone off my mind all day. Not the least because it’s given me a new word – Monogatari. An extended prose narrative, comparable to the epic. It is, as far as I can determine, a Japanese term, arising from definitions of Japanese literature.

It’s the ‘extended’ that interested me. In the 21st century, what form does an extended prose narrative take? A combination of photographs and text, mixed media in the style of artist’s books of the 80’s and early 90’s? Puppets? Illustrations? A novel that knows it’s a novel?

Can you see where I’m going with this…?
